Successful communication requires the continuous coordination of the attention of self and others to meanings carried by actions, gestures and/or words. Overview of prelinguistic period (involves 3 major transition within first year of life at. 3, 6, 9 months: by 3 months: real interaction w others. Listening to voices: infants show certain preferences when it comes to listening to voices, preference for mother, native language, and infant-directed speech (ids): ids characteristics: high pitch, elongated speech, exaggerated. Ids preferred even in non-native language (not about words, is about the qualities of speech). Use non-nutritive sucking procedure shows preference of certain types of preferences: can distinguish intonation contours of praise vs prohibition - praise has more pitch variance and less harsh. Prohibition = more short, abrupt, lower pitch (gets immediate attn of infant).
