Lecture 27
Describe the characteristics of synesthesia.
• When someone hears a certain tone and see’s
in a certain color. Or when someone see’s a
number (printed in black), but will see a
specific number in a certain color tinge.
How did Romachandran clinically test for
synesthesia? (see also pp. 18-
20)
• He had people with and without the disorder
look at a picture filled with 5’s, and a few 2’s
that were in the shape of a triangle. The
people without the disorder would take up to
25 seconds to see the 2’s shape, but the
people with it would see it instantly, a triangle
of red 2’s with a backdrop of green 5’s.
What criteria were used to discriminate
synesthetes from nonsynesthetes?
