Lecture 23
o What are the basic assumptions of Kahneman’s
capacity model of attention?
1) Arousal affects capacity
2) Feedback affects arousal and the tasks which are
chosen
Can affect activities and arousal
3) Relatively permanent cues which affect attention
Certain types of things demand attention (loud noises,
bright lights, fast movement), enduring dispositions.
4) Temporary goals which affect attention
o Distinguish between automatic and controlled
processes (see handout). Think of examples.
Some skills become so well practiced that they require
minimal capacity.
There is a continuum from relatively controlled
processing to relatively automatic processing.
