There are 2 broad categories of behaviours: overt and covert. What are the 3 types of covert behaviours: physiological responses, emotional, emotional (crying, smiling) Think of an example of each: emotions, cognitions, physiological responses, covert behaviours. He said that we should only focus on what is directly observable. Today behaviour therapy is also concerned with the covert (not directly observable) Most are inferred from overt behaviour or we ask (self report) We could be wrong and self report measures are not always accurate. Think about how we might deal with potential problems. Exercise from page 33 of the text: because these are abstract/theoretical (not real), constructions are easier, more convenient and briefer than describing a person in terms of behaviour.
