What does it mean to understand madness through a structural lens: we are going to understand it through a mad study perspective. How can we think about madness as a social movement: leads into the film because the film positions a community of people who are part of a social movement. Lunatic, mad, inmate, psycho, consumer, user, mentally ill, patient, nuts, survivor, crazy, client, ex- patient/inmate. Mental illness is something we are invested in because it is something that we can all relate to, either personally or through another. The words we use to describe madness and distress is very political. Just because you take up a subjective identity does not mean that you are involved with political movements. How madness and mad people have been identified through history. 1900"s psychiatrists refer to mad people identified as inmates and lunatics. 1960"s psychiatrists start to refer mad people as patients.
