The ted video we watched in class on the powerful poem about what it feels like to transgender by lee mokobe really touched me. The poem is very inspiring and captivating, listening to a black woman who identifies as lesbian and coming out to speak to the world about body images, social issues and caitlyn jenner. Mokobe explores social justice and gender identity issues through her poetry. As a west african woman, i know it is not easy for an individual to come out and identify as lgbtq, as african culture does not permit any gender outside heterosexuality. For any african person who identifies as belonging to this unique group does experience negative consequences; the individual will be rejected and scorned by families, friends, and communities. This particular individual will even be excluded in society. Lee mokobe, a south african person to come out.
