SOCI 3430 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Hamites, Scientific Racism, Biological Determinism
Document Summary
Race: is a social relational category that may be defined (cid:498)by socially selected physical characteristics(cid:499) Ethnicity: is defined more in terms of socially selected cultural characteristics. As biological entities, races do not exist. There is only one race, and that is the human race. This is a process through which we put people in different categories and label them. Racialization: it is the process in which people are viewed and judged essentially different in terms of their intellect, their morality, their values, and their worth because of differences of physical type of cultural heritage. Race is socially constructed because: humans rather than abstract social forces produce races, races are constructed relationally, against one another, rather than in isolation. Defined in terms of environmental attributes (environmental determinism) Defined in terms of fixed bio-genetic attributes: e. g. ; biological determinism, eugenicism (selective breeding), social darwinism.
