Kind of empowerment to redefine disability by disabled. This led to new understanding of disability as a social/political category (not related to biology, but rather a group who have common experience: disability becomes and identity category. Interrogating ableism- discrimination or prejudice against people with disabilities, especially physical ones. Disability and ableism: construction of superiority over disabled persons, ableism is embedded into culture with myths and assumptions. Intersections: disability and religion: religion-based discrimination, racism and oppression impacts the (mental) health of racialized individuals and communities. Disability and culture: comparison of bodies is ideological rather than biological- through culture. Intersectionalities: critical notion of culture: highly political and not fixed, should resist essentialism, essentialized understanding of identities, notion of cultural-relativism that ignores violations of human rights, and seeing cultural as social constructed, seeing culture as socially constructed. Identifying relations of power and privilege within cultural/religious environments.
