SOCI 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Cultural Lag, Iphone, Ethnocentrism
Document Summary
It helps us not only to understand our own culture but expand our insights to include other people in the world. It allows us to use our sociological imagination to interpret our own world and the world of others. Culture: a system that creates behaviours, beliefs, knowledge, language, values and materials which are all passed down from generation to generation. It is created by human beings which we navigate our daily lives in interaction with others and the larger society. With culture we create the norms which allow us to survive in our environment. Culture evolves, looks different over time and constantly changes. If we understand how a person is shaped by cultural influences, it enhances our ability to expand perspectives and consider alternate views of the world. As we gain awareness of the role of culture in the socialization process then our ability to communicate personally and professionally is improved.
