SOCI 3630 Lecture Notes - Lecture 52: Stroke Volume, Pulse Pressure, Palpation
Document Summary
Every beat, heart pumps amount of blood stroke volume into the aorta: ~70ml in adults. Force on arterial walls generates a pressure wave felt in periphery pulse. Palpating peripheral pulse gives the rate and rhythm of heartbeat and local data on condition of artery. Radial pulse usually palpated while vital signs are measured. Measure pulse for 30 seconds count the beats and x2; avoid 15seconds and x4; four fold mistake if you skip 1 a few heartbeats. Resting adult; normal heart rate range = 60-100 beats per minute (bpm). Rate rises with age, being more rapid in infancy and childhood and more moderate during adulthood and older years. Varies with gender, after puberty females have faster rate than males. Adults with heart rate less than 60bpm brachycardia: in athletes. Co = sv x r cardiac output = stroke volume x rate.
