These terms and definitions are in progress and always changing and culturally and historically specific. Transgender (trans*) is often used as an umbrella term in so far as it refers to a range of people who do not identify with their gender assignment at birth. Anyone who crosses, upsets or defies cultural gender norms is considered transgender. (transit and gender) either by choice or necessity. For e. g. those who are trans today include those who are transexual, cross dress, drag kings and queens, a range of people that might identify with female masculinity or male masculinity. Trans refers to those you cross over or transgress existing cultural norms. Ways of appearing trans will look different because the gender norms governing what it means to be masculinity and femininity change.
