Modernity arrives with the disembedded self regulating free market economy. Modernity come about when the economy becomes a separate entity from society; in traditional society the economy was embedded in society, it was regulated, lorded over by religious, political elites. Major part of this process revolves around the commodification of land, labor and capital factors of production. Food riots: takes on the standard orthodox position of the food riots. For the leading social scientists there was nothing more to the food riots than that people were hungry. Food riots were a response to a commodification of food. The economy of england was regulated, embedded in society. Bread in traditional society was the staff of life, everyone was entitled to bread, it was part of the noblese oblige. With a new economy, bread becomes something else; it becomes a commodity, not everyone is entitled to it unless they can afford to buy it.
