Ww2 and beyond: the privatization of motherhood as full time mothering. 1990s and beyond: intensive mothering: emerging from neo-liberalism and as a backlash to feminism. Good mother in pop culture usually white, middle class, able bodied, heterosexual, married, urban. Good mother portrayed at a specific age (30-35) There"s nothing biological about the meaning of mothering. The meaning is culturally created and produced, its not natural or static. How and why the meaning of motherhood changes. The meaning and practice of good motherhood is culturally transformed in response to larger societal factors (economic, political etc. ) 4 times in history when the meaning of motherhood radically changed in meaning and practice. About 500 b. c transform from nomadic to agricultural. From agriculture to industrial economy (mid 17-mid 1800"s) In agricultural times, household produced everything it needed. For mothers, motherhood itself was not an identity or occupation. Mothers were active producers, not ornamental housewives.
