Day 2: Ideology and History:
Ways of seeing: The end of ideology book-prof. veld…-during cold war where free world and communist
world on different sides (1960s WW2) –US government is best in Veld’s opinion –behavioural revolution
where economy becomes interest in social science. 30 years later Soviet Union collapses 1990. 1995
conservative party loses power and conservatives come back with common sense revolution- informs
public about simplicity of economy and that they won’t spend more than they have –why equity and
programs like welfare should become workfare or financial assistance must come with work-democracy
from Athens-Aristotle is first political scientist: one, few or many rulers and they each are categorized
btw. Good or bad. (Monarchy (good) or tyranny (bad), few- aristocracy g or oligarchy b, democracy bad
or polity good)
Sovern- can make laws and enforce them –Federal has multiple governments and unitary is one
government. These can be categorized in parliamentary or presidential system (separate powers
divided). Ex. Canada is federal and parliamentary, UK is parliamentary and unitary, US is federal and
