Ideology & history (week 3 sept 28) Ideology: fairly coherent and comprehensive set of ideas that explains and evaluates social conditions, helps people understand their place in society, and provides a program for social and political action (terrance ball) Conservatism: tradition (behaviour should be guided by, divinity, moral code of society/ morality. Humans are flawed from birth, not perfect, unequal by birth, position in society is assigned, born into station of life. Society is divinely inspired by god, unchanging, natural (not man made), organic, everyone is connected in society, hierarchal. Humans are, to some extent, perfect and equal. By nature are acquisitive, materialistic, and competitive, our station in life can be improved. The central unit of analysis is the individual themselves. Is natural although not divinely inspired, organic the whole is greater than the sum) Change is desirable, and requires action to help bring it about. Responsibility of government is to ensure quality of condition all citizens are treated equally.
