The way you explain social phenomena is important. Gender is a social construction that is power based -> inequality. Sex: refers to the biological difference between men and women; we classify them as male or female. Some are born with more male or more female characteristics -> called intersex. Gender: appears to be natural but it is not. It is social and relates to meanings and relations on the basis of the physical characteristics (masculine/feminine). Includes transgender -> they don"t conform the society"s expectations. *characteristics of masculinity and femininity (the way someone behaves/acts) Female-> associated with maternal instinct; things like daycare. *gender changes historically + cross culturally (they change from culture to culture) Gender involves hierarchy and ranking (power: the historical construction of gender roles in the west and the industrial revolution: a case study. Pre-industrial characterized by: non-wage economy, unity of workers home, production. *women and men worked together to sustain the household (farm work)
