Theory for understanding society and social change: production and exchange produces social relations, appearance vs reality, manifest latent, political economy- important for engels as there is no such thing as just the political. It defines us as someone who needs satisfaction, comfort and consumption. Western europe invaded the middle east: the division of labour always exists in some form but it is specialized in capitalism. Contin: what happens when the market in the society takes over society. Society becomes a market and becomes alienated: adam smith: it is part of human nature to truck, barter and exchange, the factory is the basic model of capital, purpose of technology is to reduce the cost of labour. Capitalism becomes so productive it cant sustain itself: what broke down capitalism, in engels view, creating value and giving it to the owner is exploitation, instead, it should be giving it to the workers who produced it.
