Intersectionality subverts race/gender binaries in the service of theorizing identity in a more complex fashion ; demonstrates that. Subjectivity is constituted by mutually reinforcing vectors of race, gender, class, and sexuality ; challenges a gender/race/class neutral approach and rejects the single axis framework (nash, 2008, p. 2) Individuals may be both members of minority groups and majority groups. Intersectional oppression arises out of the combination of various oppressions which, together, produce something unique and distinct from any one form of discrimination standing alone (ontario human rights. Commission 2001, p. 4): need to understand that the resulting hierarchy or social stratification is complex and interlocking, as both mcintosh & bishop note. Race is believed by many people to be a biological trait, like sex. However, not all people of a racial group share the same biological traits, nor do they have chromosomes that identify them as genetic members of that group.
