Nuclear family component: two opposite sex individuals in a monogamous marriage, procreative norms- children, economic roles: males work, women stay home to care for the family. Polygamy- having more than one partner: canada does not recognize these marriages- they only recognize one spouse. Polypany- partner with all the things: all gender expression. 1892: polygamy is criminalized in canada: arrival of mormons- more than one wife: was entitled to payments. R v. bear"s shin bone 1899: state felt that indigenous treated their women poorly, abandoning second+ wives and children, husband abandons. Monogamous marriage is a key development in western civilization. Unity doctrine: women = extensions of their husbands, women could not own property, fathers have absolute right to children, men could divorce/abandon wives and still retain legal control over them, women are vulnerable under the unity doctrine.
