To recognize diversity in masculinities is not enough. We must also recognize the relations between different kinds of masculinity; relations of alliance, dominance and subordination. These relationships are constructed through practices that exclude and include, that intimidate, exploit, and so on. Social construction: gendered ideas of what men and women are like, not biologically but socially in the society: gender as performativity (judith butler) Gender is seen as a performance by performing gender (the way we walk, talk, sit, posture, the way we dress intentionally and no consciously etc. ) Just because acting a certain way feels right, it isn"t right. Connell suggests that talking about gender as a performativity only obscures the fact that gender becomes a deep part of who we are both physically and psychologically.
