Sexual violence con"t: a (brief) history of rape/sexual assault law in canada, rape act (britain, 1275) Early rape laws were enacted to protect men"s property rights. Rape threatened the property rights of fathers, brothers and husbands of rapes women. Sexually assaulted women were considered unmarried (if you didn"t marry, you were economically dependent on your father or brother) Raped women who were already married: you wanted to make sure that your own children inherit your property (must keep your wife under control and make sure other men don"t rape her) Age of consent was 12, but was lowered to 10 in the 1500"s. Most cases of rape were not reported because of shame brought on the family. Many rape myths, in which a women is blamed, were tied to this. Rape law altered: carnal knowledge of a women who is not his wife, without consent or consent being cores/coerced (sleep with me or i"ll stab you)
