Mercantile (expansion): effort to go broad in search of commodities and trade, textiles, metals (silver/gold) Some similarities existed between these societies and those they encountered. Enough of a surplus created to benefit some. Highly exploitative few lived well, majority did not. A system, created where there is a state - a monarchical one, a system of administration (tax collectors, standing armies), worked well in the sense that the system was relatively stable to last for 7 centuries;
