Immigration/migration to canada: immigration policy can be used to control population levels, fill skill shortages, increase competition and level wages and conditions. History of canadian immigration policy: following confederation, canada pursued an open door policy where everyone was welcome, except people of colour, criminals. They faced discrimination and obstacles: open door policy was designed to expand population (colonize) and provide labour for agriculture/ settlement of the west, national policy - build railways to unite the country (resist us), develop industry in central. It was an attempt to balance immigration with economies performance (during bad times reduce immigration and during good times increase it) = this concept was legally abandoned. Lecture: economic class emphasizes particular skills of immigrants (e. x businesses, information technology, temporary migrant workers, live-in caregivers, family reunification and refugee both emphasize humanitarian factors. Live-in caregiver program" usually means living in homes helping with children or seniors.
