SOSC 1510 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Visible Minority, Equal Pay For Equal Work
Document Summary
Employment equity could be defined as a strategy to eradicate the effects of discrimination and make job opportunities available to everyone including those who have been excluded historically. Some of the people affected are women, visible minorities, aboriginals and persons with disabilities, these are the major groups affected by discrimination. At the heart of gender equality in the work society, changes are being made towards structuring the labour market into male and female segments. These classifications are known as occupation gender segregation. The division of task, status and responsibilities within an organization, with the males having a better pay and greater authority than the women (vertical segregation). Gender has long been used to define job requirements; men naturally rejected the idea of employing women in their occupations for the fear of having their wages undercut. In addition, traditional values tend to define female roles in the society, roles like childcare and home making.
