SOSC 2480 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Social Darwinism, Rough Guides
Document Summary
Week 4 - lecture - africa and culture(s) Need to understand the terms we use in courses on africa, and the lens that we put on to view it and its communities. Need to understand societies through the lens of culture - how we understand the diversity of historical and contemporary africa (today africa in development) through the lens of culture . One way of doing so is through language, through food and clothes, among many other things, as expressions of peopleness , giving them a name, giving them a character, and ascribing characteristics to them that distinguish them from other peoples. We can do this at the level of scale: of a nations, societies, of regions, and of communities, etc. Key expressions of a people - language - very few things that are more fundamental. Yet, there are many communities that are not of one language, and many peoples that live across many places who speak the same language.
