One of the notable features of the colonial period was creation and growth of colonial cities. Some of the great colonial cities grew out of preexisting cities. Most major cities are modern as a result of colonialism. Cities needed construction workers, street sweepers, domestic servants, and more. Economy of africa and cultural interchanges through religion, schools, etc. Economic and social changes - relocating to cities. Extractive industries developed in 19th and 20th century - gold boom, mining. Different ethnic groups/clans coming together, becoming part of a bigger identity - member of ethnic group and also of a territory being coordinated. Few places in africa where women do not dominate petty trade. By 1950s it was clear through colonized world, colonialism"s days were numbered. British and french used late 1950s to prepare their colonies for independence. Non-european immigrant groups often controlled the economies" middle ground. Inability to project state power into hinterland (regions beyond the coast/border)
