Canada remains the top five western nations in terms of incarceration rates: our courts are not overly lenient, most people tend to think that our courts are not hard enough on convicted sentencing as high as united states. (power point graph) criminals. Purpose of sentencing: to denounce unlawful conduct, to deer the offender and other persons from committing crimes, to separate offender from society, where necessary, to assist in rehabilitation of offender, to provide reparation for harm done to victims or to the community, to promote a sense of responsibility in offender and acknowledgment. Retribution: desert, proportionality, focus on past offence, just desserts, denunciation, critique: Keeping the peace, having good behavior etc. , if they please the judge they can be released with no criminal record: suspended sentence court convicts, offender has a record but id not sentenced, fine second most common outcome of sentencing decisions next to probation.
