4 lenses: modernism/anti modernism, the impact of the structure of the economy on urban space, fordism/post fordism, the city as hybrid of nature and society, cyborg urbanism, governance, planning and envisioning cities. It is modern today but what about tomorrow: capitalism- commodity fetishism, living where fashion and entertainment meet. The clash between ruin and novelty: desired affect: awaken people to the ruins of the past in the midst of present, highlights the destruction and impermanent culture of modern capitalism, the illusory and ruinous nature of progress. Modernism: the vision, ideas and value of how to be modern. Modernization: the processes of making the visions real. Modernity: the lived reality, the maelstrom of perpetual disintegration and renewal. In place of religion and myth, human reason as a way of knowing: human progress- break with tradition and superstition, universal truths exist and knowable, the result: universal improvement in the human condition.
