1950s-60s - assumed link between culture and development received attention in development studies and was dubbed by modernization theorists. Culture is what distinguishes modern from traditional societies. Distinction between societies with traditional values versus modern values. Exposure to modern values could allow post-colonial nations to adapt and cultivate. American ideas by adopting american ways of life. To develop, need to abandon traditional values and adopt modern western values - would eventually transform underdeveloped to developed. Main difference between traditional and modern societies. Hierarchal view of the world with modern societies on top and traditional on bottom. Not entirely wrong - india caste system - rigid and has negative consequences for many stuck in bottom of it. Traditional societies had to adapt to modern values - only way to develop. After 1960s, started to propose less hierarchal and more binary view of development and culture. Binary of modern versus traditional, but not hierarchal.
