The british troops had a difficult time beating back the germans and retreated to dunkirk in 1940: famous time when ordinary fishermen crossed the english channel to save stranded soldiers. War cabinet real debate over whether britain should engage in serious discussion with germany re terms of peace. They worked through the weekend (which was sacriscent at the time: chrchill convinces war cabinet to not back down, and fascist germany was not to be trusted. Hitler decides to invate ussr he had thought that britain would give up, but they did not so he was forced to fight a war on both fronts: hitler was seeking living space for the germans.
