According to david harvey (2011) the city is comprised of multiple layers that reflect different historical periods of social organization different spatio-temporalities. Conflicting processes develop as a result of these multiple s- Can be constrained by the nature of things that have been produced in the past. 2 ways of examining the city: periodization & conjunctural. Periodization looks at capitalist urban development in relation to world scale regimes of capital accumulation (keynesianism * neoliberalism) to changing national and local configurations of urban space. Conjunctural examines site-specific processes of urban restructuring their sources in relation to the crisis-tendencies of world capitalism, and their implications for the future trajectory of urban development and local democracy. Reformist interverntions in the 19th century aim at improving the horrible living conditions of the industrial polluted city could be seen as a way of cleaning up the city (harvey 2011)
