Drug, behaviour, context: these three words are the ones that i want to guide our first actual exploration into addiction. Although our discussion will grow to consider addiction in ways that will take us beyond substance use, i think it is worthwhile starting with an exploration of drugs. Not just any drugs though, but drugs that have an addictive potential or liability. Eventually we will develop pharmaceutical strategies that on their own will prevent and treat addiction problems. Yet drug use - and drug use problems - may be just as much shaped by the "social bodies in which human beings are located, as by the physical bodies we occupy.
