Document Summary

Class notes: does technology drive history? (technological determinism; innovation or use) We want to focus on how discoveries were used. What is it do we mean by innovation. Questions: determinism: the philosophical idea that every event or state of affairs including every human decision and action is the inevitable and necessary consequence of antecedent states of affairs. Cause and effect that occurs no matter what. In use rather than in creation moves us away from technological determinism. We assume all tools are used for something for example box cutters. However it can also be used as a violent weapon. You can take technology and use it for something that it was not intended to. Planes were created just to fly but then they were used to bomb things. In a horrible way terrorists are innovators by using a plane for a different use even if they didn"t do something physical.
