This is an extension of earlier humanist views. In shakespeare, the focus was on humans, not god. This reaction of hedonism came from the prior regicide. Monarchy is one of the conditions which lead to the commercial of theatre in the 1600s. Queen elizabeth wanted to ban all religious plays and to run in through before it is performed by her. Elizabeth takes on this almost demi-god status. She promoted herself of this idea as a virgin queen in order to hold together a country that was always in chaos by manipulating her sexuality, body and beauty.
