Document Summary

Language impairment or phonological disorders may co-occur with motor speech disorders: may have difficulty chewing and smiling. Systems of speech production: respiratory system- regulates the inhalation-exhalation cycle for passive breathing and for speech production. Speech production requires airflow to produce sound. May be ingressive (going in) or egressive (going out) Most languages like english rely on egressive. Creates airflow by pushing air out of lungs through trachea, using various muscle groups. To produce speech inhalation/exhalation cycle must be controlled and coordinated. In passive breathing the ratio of duration in inhalation to exhalation is 1:1. In speech the ratio ranges from 1:6 to 1:9. Exhalation needs to be extended and manipulated to produce stress syllables: phonatory system- regulates production of voice and the prosodic/intonational aspects of speech. Speech is produced by changing the airflow in various was at various points along the vocal tract. Major source is the vibration of vocal folds. Needed for voiced and voiceless sounds, stressed syllables, intonation.
