Perilingual hearing loss- hearing loss that occurs before child has developed language: prevalence and incidence. 1 or 2 children per 1000 are born with significant hearing loss. 1-2% of school age children exhibit severe permanent hearing loss. Just under 20% of school children have hearing loss that is educationally significant. I(cid:374)di(cid:272)ates the hea(cid:396)i(cid:374)g loss is se(cid:396)ious e(cid:374)ough to hi(cid:374)de(cid:396) a (cid:272)hild"s ability to perform well educationally. 1/3 of these children exhibit additional disabilities that increase their education risk. About 69800 students between 6-21 receive specific education services.
