Document Summary

Csd 2260 chapter 2: the anatomy of respiration. Respiration- the exchange of gas between an organism and its environment: inspiration- bringing oxygen to cells of the body to sustain life by breathing in. Alveoli- miniscule air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange takes place: expiration- breathing out to eliminate waste products, air pressure- the force exerted on the walls of a chamber by molecules of air. Decreasing the area size increases the amount of pressure. Increasing the area size decreases the amount of pressure. Positive pressure- when pressure increases, molecules are forced closer together. Negative pressure- when pressure increases, molecules drift further apart. The support structure of respiration: supported and protected by a bony cage, gas exchange is carried out by the lungs, while the rib cage acts as a protective function, structures of respiration: Vertebrae and vertebral column- where the entire thorax is suspended from: also houses the spinal cord. Ribs are their attachment to the vertebral column.
