GLY-1104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Hydrograph, Dissolved Load, Drainage Basin
Document Summary
Freshwater- 2. 5% -> glaciers are 74% of that, and 26% is unfrozen. Of that 26%, surface water is 1. 5%, and groundwater is 98. 5% Of that 1. 5%, lakes/streams are 57%, soil moisture is 33%, atmosphere is. Hydrologic cycle- continuous exchange of water on earth and in the atmosphere. Reservoirs (storage)- ocean, ice, groundwater, soil moisture, water vapor, and blota. Stream- water flowing out at variable rates that travel through a single channel or through a number of interconnected channels at a variety of scales (amazon to water flowing down the street) Hydrograph- a graph of stream discharge versus time. Drainage basin- land in which water flowing across the land surface drains into a particular stream or river and ultimately flows through the a single point or outlet. Streams are influenced by basin slope, basin size and shape, urbanization. Drainage density- can influence the response of a stream. Drainage pattern: radial- symmetrical hill, dendritic- uniform geology, structurally controlled- faults/floods.
