In terms of evolution, anxiety is adaptive. Anxiety disorders are the most common disorders. Psychodynamic view: conflicts between id and superego: neurosis. Evolutionary theory: flight or fight response is adaptive: contemporary stress is different, biological preparedness. Behavioral theory (little albert: body conditions f & f response to stimuli, mowrer"s two factor theory: Anxiety is maintained through avoidance through operant conditioning. Cognitive theory: negative or irrational thoughts cause anxiety. Automatic nervous system (two branches: sympathetic: turns on the fight or flight mechanism. Mobilizes energy, adrenaline, etc: parasympathetic: turns off the fight or flight mechanism. Turns off the sympathetic branch; helps relax, digest, sleep, etc. Panic disorder: recurrent unexpected panic attacks. Abrupt surge of intense fear or discomfort: at least one of the attacks has been followed by a period of one month (or more) of one (or more) of the following: Maladaptive change in behavior related to attacks. Pure panic disorder: absence of agoraphobia (afraid to leave one"s home)
