KINES 300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Ligamenta Flava, Spinal Disc Herniation, Facet Joint

15 views3 pages

Document Summary

Orientation of facet/zygoapopyseal joints and impact on motion available at these joints. Good for flexion/extension but does not allow rotation. Good for rotation, flexion and some extension (limited by dens) but does not allow lateral flexion. A lot of flexion, extension and rotation. A lot of lateral flexion but limited by uncovertebral joints. Thoracic: vertical orientation in frontal plane (75 of inclination to horizontal, gets more vertical as you move down) Facet alignment is good for rotation but ribs restrict rotation. A lot of lateral flexion and flexion. Extension is limited by long spinous processes. Thoracic/lumbar: starts to turn towards sagittal orientation. A lot of flexion, some extension and lateral flexion. Sacral/lumbar: turns back to frontal plane and vertical orientation. Changes in disc pressure with various postures. The most pressure is on the disc with sitting upright or lifting heavy loads. Standing puts less pressure on the discs than sitting. A chair that leans back reduces pressure.
