Document Summary

For men = costly to miss reproductive opportunity. For women = costly to perceive commitment where there is none. Stone age = humans lived in small & homogenous groups (groups were typically in conflict with other groups for resources, religion, etc. ) Minimal group experiment: designed a distribution matrix resources were given to a member of a random group to be divided btw members of red group & members of blue. But large number of people showed ingroup preference (gave more to ingroup member than outgroup) Just the existence of a label was sufficient to trigger tendency to discriminate against outgroup: reason: all humans learnt that feeling good about yourself (identity) can only be achieved by belonging to a group. Build positive identity by becoming distinctive & better by alternative groups. Stone age = identity was provided by primary group membership.
