Beauty is not only in the eye of the beholder (people make consistent judgments of what is or is not attractive) Men prefer women 4 inches shorter. College men find current physique similar to their ideal. College women find themselves heavier than their ideal. On average, males wished to be 3 lbs. heavier and females 7 lbs. lighter. Both genders err in their estimates of preferences by the opposite gender. Women believed that men like women thinner than men actually report liking. Women prefer men somewhat thinner than men assume. Men think that women like a heavier stature than females reported liking. Men who displayed dominant actions in videotaped experiment were judged by women as more attractive. Women under similar conditions were judged as less attractive by men. Sociobiologists" perspective: evolutionary forces favor the survival of men and women with certain preferences because they provide reproductive advantages.
