-130 ethnic groups (1990 US census)
-Static Definition of Culture: culture comprises all the thoughts, beliefs, customs, laws,
morals, values, religious observances, festivals, food preferences, languages, art,
songs, entertainment, dramas, literature, tools, implements, artifacts, and social
institutions that are in current society
-Aspects of Culture:
•Symbolism - beliefs and values which form identities (religion & customs)
•Interactions - communication and interactions (non-verbal & touch/contact)
•Concrete - music, art, books, foods
-The Cultural Iceberg:
•what is done?…your behaviors
•what is good/best?…your values
-family time
-being polite
-religion
•what is true?…your beliefs
•what is real? ….your world view
-What Culture is NOT:
•artifacts of a group or people
•laundry list of traits and facts
•race or other Biological Traits
•Lifestyle or Economic well-being of a group ,,
-What is the difference between learning culture from the “outside in” vs. from the
“inside out”?
•outside in is going to a different culture and seeing the differences and telling the
people how they should do things differently BUT inside out is understanding the
culture and accepting that when you are there then you are immersed in their
culture
