Some philosophers questioned the institution of slavery, and they were criticized. Socrates>>plato>>and aristotle - said that there was a universal truth. The first, socrates, got in trouble in athens, charged with corruption & denial of the gods, received death sentence, drank poison. Teacher, taught respect of human reason, challenged many beliefs and traditions. Said you can use the human mind to discover the universal truth.
