MGT 500 Lecture 80: Cultural differences
Document Summary
Job conditions that cause stress show differences across cultures. For example, us employees are stressed more by lack of control, while chinese employees are stressed by lack of training and job evaluations. In collectivist cultures, working more hours is seen as a sacrifice to help your family, but in individualistic cultures, work is seen as a personal achievement that takes away from your family. Selection and placement decisions are important for management to consider. Management shouldn"t only consider hiring experienced people with internal locus, but these people might better adapt to high-stress jobs and perform them more effectively. Temporary employees are at risk for experiencing more stress with uncertainty and unclearness over roles, which can affect their chances of being hired. Employees in these situations can manager their impressions and create more of a tolerance for unclearness. Training can increase a person"s self-efficacy and lessen job strain. People perform better when they have goals that are specific and challenging.
