JOUR 601 Lecture Notes - Lecture 75: Sentience
Document Summary
If robots and other artificially intelligent things might be considered people to determine their rights, the question is whether their expressive speech should be protected. It is possible that these beings could receive protections for speech. These robots are able to contribute to political discussion and add to the marketplace of ideas. These are the justifications for freedom of speech protections with our democracy. The courts have interpreted free speech laws as protecting value of expression for listeners and speakers to give protections under the first amendment. A lot of legal commentators have said that our first amendment has expanded protection of speech to things that aren"t human. Corporations have rights in political speech and are protected under the first amendment, for example. Search engines have first amendment protection because they are a product with speech-like qualities. Protections for speech for robots has been granted in the us and other countries to freely express ideas.
