Document Summary

Statistics: a method for collecting, organizing, analyzing and interpreting data (numerical information), as well as drawing conclusions based on the data. A population is the set containing all the people or objects whose properties are to be described and analyzed by the data collector. A sample is a subset or subgroup of the population. A random sample is a sample obtained in such a way that every element in the population has an equal chance of being selected for the sample. Random samples are used to make conclusions about the population. It is also important to have an represetnataive sample, which occurs when the sample exhibits characteristics typically possessed by the population. A frequency distribution consists of data items in one column and the frequency that each data value occurs. A histogram is a type of bar graph in which the bars touch. A frequency polygon must be closed, connect the last dots of the line graph to the x-axis.
