PR 662 Lecture 63: The Socializer
Document Summary
The social aspect of teamwork is one of the best things about group projects. Things like friendly banter, jokes, and support from members can energize the group and make overall effort more enjoyable. Socializers, though, can take these social aspects to the extreme and hinder group productivity. Socializers are people who: have a hard time turning off small talk, have a hard time focusing their attention on the task, delay the start of meetings, frequently side-track the group with other topics of conversation. Positive: relieve stress, build relationships with team members. If the team has more than one socializer, they feed off of each other and make things worse. Socializers can side track the team for many reasons. Dealing with socializers: have a clear meeting structure, this keeps everyone focused on the tasks, prevents members from getting side-tracked by conversations and goofing off.
