Socrates" idea that self-knowledge=foundation of any other worthwhile knowledge. Socrates talks to alcibiades, who is this dumb rich pompous guy who thinks he knows everything, and is about to go talk to the athenians about the things they don"t know, but. Socrates shows him that he doesn"t even understand justice and injustice. Socrates tells alcibiades that before he does anything, he needs to do some self- cultivation. Soul=olden day ideal for what we now call the mind (according to me) Our self=our soul our body is not our self. Taking care of your body=taking care of something that belongs to you, not taking care of yourself. Socrates convinces alcibiades that to prosper he needs not riches and material goods, but self-knowledge. Socrates is more interested in what you don"t know than what you do know. Socrates didn"t write anything himself, so we know about him through plato"s writings.
