Written in plato"s later years, so socrates serves as a mouthpiece for plato"s own ideas. Not so much an accurate description of what socrates would have said. The real things (flowers, trees, etc. ) that the man who is pulled out of the cave sees are called forms. The sun represents the form of the good; it allows us to see/understand all other. Forms/things; the form that allows one to realize all other forms. Philosopher-kings are those who make it out of the cave they must then return to the cave to educate and rule. All the forms are connected, and are comprehended together in the following way: you work your way up to the form of the good through thought until you grasp the form of. The overarching goal of the city is to educate those with the right natures, so that they can turn their minds sharply toward the form of the good.
